My time as a UNF Foreign Language student was incredible
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
Dear Diana,
My passion is helping people communicate. Technology is making our world even more connected, and language should not be a barrier that limits what we can do together. It is necessary for our global economy as well as cooperation and understanding. By working with a company with foreign clients, I help people to work together despite distance and language/cultural differences. A part of this is translating and interpreting which requires taking into account the cultures of the target languages as well as always learning new terms because language is always changing. I love languages and cultures, and it never feels like work because my mind is always stimulated when I am communicating in other languages.
My study abroad in Strasbourg, France, helped me develop my French and gave me experience in traveling and living in another culture. This experience made me feel even more culturally sensitive and more capable of interacting with others with different backgrounds. Also, my professors were a great support system, and their guidance and instruction fostered an environment where I could grow. Through this program, I have made networking opportunities that will last me a lifetime.
I was prepared for a career in languages because my professors gave me practical knowledge and prepared me for real-life interactions with French speakers. They taught through example and hands-on training. I know anytime I need anything, there is someone at UNF who can help me or knows someone who can.
Warmly,
Brittany Mautone
