More than 110 girls visited RIT to learn about technology, engineering, computing and science at the Girls Soaring in STEM Fair. The annual event is hosted by RIT's Women in Science, Women in Computing, Women in Technology and Women in Engineering groups.

Sustainable capstone project monitors RMSC exhibit

An RIT senior capstone project at the Rochester Museum & Science Center has given a team of environmental science students a crash course in green infrastructure and sustainable design. RIT students are contributing to a five-year project to monitor the museum's Regional Green Infrastructure Showcase. The installation reduces storm-water runoff and improves water quality. A museum exhibit, designed and developed by RIT students, illustrates the rain water saved by the installation in terms of bathtubs full of water. The capstone project, now in its second year, is overseen by the Water Education Collaborative, a not-for-profit organization that operates under the auspices of the Rochester Museum & Science Center. RIT Saunders College alumni pitch business on 'Shark Tank'

Would a mission to save elephants and a harem-style pants apparel line have enough trunk appeal to savvy investors of the wildly popular ABC show Shark Tank? Two RIT alumni from Saunders College of Business are betting their company's unique product line of The Elephant Pants will end up in a negotiated deal with one or more sharks when the show airs at 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24. Nathan Coleman '09 (marketing) from Ossining, N.Y., and James Brooks '09 (international business) from Schenectady, N.Y., discovered their entrepreneurial American dream during a trip to Thailand in 2013 when they discovered wearable art—a harem-style pant with a Thai design that was comfortable, trendy and sized perfectly for most body types. Smart Skins sensors are ready for takeoff

A new technology that uses 3D printing to embed flight sensors on an aircraft wing could allow for manufacturing stronger, safer planes. Currently, sensors used to detect such things as airflow over the wings and pressure, are manufactured then adhered atop the aircraft wing. But this new technology allows for embedding sensors within the wing itself, enabling more precise measurements of stress or pressure that could disable an airplane or unmanned aircraft. "This enables us to integrate sensors in a way that has not been done before, because you can put these sensors directly on a wing surface," said David Borkholder, the Bausch & Lomb Professor in the microsystems engineering department in RIT's Kate Gleason College of Engineering.
