Department of Homeland Security grant expands student anti-terrorism initiative

It's Time: ExOut Extremism, a RIT student project, has won yet another prestigious prize. The online initiative, which started out as a classroom assignment, has been awarded $149,000 from the Department of Homeland Security to continue its campaign to counter violent extremism. The latest award comes just months after winning a global award at a star-studded gala and winning the State Department's Peer to Peer (P2P) Challenging Extremism competition. "I'm proud of this team of students for harnessing the power of social media to help fight extremism and global terrorism. This funding will allow RIT to expand this innovative and important campaign," said U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., in announcing the award. Read More >>

Researchers work to make technology more accessible to all

Using new technology and gadgets can be frustrating. For the more than 1 billion people around the world who have some form of disability, it can create significant challenges in everyday life. At RIT, student and faculty researchers in the Center for Accessibility and Inclusion Research are working to change the culture of development in an effort to make technology accessible for all. "Computers, smartphones and the Internet have become essential for communicating and getting a job, but there are a lot of people potentially being left out," said Vicki Hanson, a distinguished professor of information sciences and technologies. "This is a great opportunity for RIT to tap into its diverse culture of accessibility." Read More >>

Film and animation alumnus to receive a Technical Academy Award next month

A graduate of RIT's School of Film and Animation (SOFA) will be among those recognized for scientific and technical achievement next month when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out its annual Academy Awards—also known as the Oscars. Brian Cantwell, who graduated with a BFA in film and animation in 1999, is a member of the team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) that will be recognized for its design and development of ILM's facial performance-capture solving system. "All of us here in the School of Film and Animation are thrilled for Brian, who has been showcasing his amazing talents at ILM for more than a decade," said Malcolm Spaull, administrative chair of SOFA. "His credits have appeared in almost every blockbuster over that time. We couldn't be more proud of him." Read More >>
