Learning by doing

Taylor Wolf was seeking a lab experience to complement her studies and wound up discovering her life's passion. "Research is my thing," said Wolf, a fourth-year biochemistry major from Norwich, N.Y., who is working on a research project in infectious disease. "I like the problem-solving aspect. You're engaged, you're involved, and you learn things that you never set out to learn." It's an experience RIT is encouraging more and more students to incorporate into their undergraduate years, an extension of the university's commitment that every student be engaged in some form of experiential learning, be it through a co-op assignment, senior labs, capstone or independent research project. Alumni awarded highest rating for snowboard

After Zhenya Grinshteyn '09 (marketing) saw a YouTube video one night where surfers were making their own surfboards, he sent a text to his former college roommate Ben Beisler '10 (civil engineering technology). "I figured if these guys can figure out how to make surfboards, we can probably figure out how to make snowboards," Grinshteyn said. Five years later, the duo's company, Empire Grown, produced one of the best snowboards for 2017, according to the online publication Board Insiders. RIT expands agreement with University in China

Tianjin University of Technology of China, a nationally recognized leader for its programs in engineering, technology and the arts and the first technological university providing education for the deaf in China, has entered into new partnership agreements to enroll students in one- and two-year programs at RIT's Kate Gleason College of Engineering and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID). Tianjin University has been a longtime partner of NTID, and representatives visited RIT as an opportunity to review and confirm details related to these new agreements. A formal signing ceremony took place this month. Representatives from Tianjin University attending the signing ceremony included the university's vice president, head of the technical college for the deaf, head of the school of engineering and the associate director of the Office of International Relations.
