Dear Diana,

As a high school senior, I know you have a lot on your plate. Your college applications are a big time commitment, and I want to help make the process as seamless as possible. Here are a few insider tips from someone who has worked in college admission for many years and seen almost everything:

  • Visit campus. Talk to tour guides and students to get a sense of the community you will be joining. Get lost and see if anyone helps you find your way. Pay attention as you walk around. Are students smiling and laughing, or looking tired and stressed out?
  • Start your personal statement. You may try out several topics before you pick the one that is really “you,” so it’s a good idea to start brainstorming now. Stick to your strengths. Now is not a time to be a poet or comedian if you aren’t one!
  • Select teachers who know you well to write your recommendations. Your grade in class does not always correlate with how great your recommendation will be. You want to pick a teacher who can speak to your strengths inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Keep up with your coursework! A high school career than ends on a high note lets us know you are prepared and excited for college-level work.

Last but certainly not least, stay true to yourself throughout the application process. Regardless of how many insider guides you’ve read – there is no right college essay topic or perfect resume format! Let your passions shine through. The admissions committee wants to get to know YOU.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Walker
Dean of Admissions
