Austin Quinlan, president of the RIT Beekeepers Club, checks three beehives recently brought to campus and placed near the RIT Community Garden. The goal is to help curb the decline of the bee population while promoting sustainability efforts. Quinlan, a fourth-year film major from Marcellus, N.Y., said colony collapse disorder is threatening the population of honeybees across the country. The club plans to eventually collect, filter and bottle honey produced by the bees.

Smaller stars pack big X-ray punch for developing planets

Young stars much less massive than the sun can unleash a torrent of X-ray radiation that can significantly shorten the lifetime of planet-forming disks surrounding these stars. This result comes from a new study of a group of nearby stars using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes. RIT astronomer Joel Kastner led the study. Kastner's team found evidence that intense X-ray radiation produced by some of the young stars in the TW Hya Association (TWA), which is about 160 light years from Earth, has destroyed disks of dust and gas surrounding them. RIT welcomes esteemed researcher to lead new Center for Cybersecurity

Matthew Wright, a leading expert in internet security and privacy, will join RIT in August. He will serve as a faculty member in the Department of Computing Security and director of the new Center for Cybersecurity. The new multidisciplinary center, in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, aims to tackle the challenges of cybersecurity by allowing faculty and students to engage in a wide variety of research, by creating partnerships with industry and by promoting wider cybersecurity education and training. RIT industrial design students win coveted Editors' Award at ICFF in New York City

RIT's industrial design program enjoyed a stellar several days at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) 2016, part of this spring's Design Week in New York City. RIT's Metaproject 06 booth with Poppin—a leading manufacturer of workplace furniture and supplies based in New York City—was awarded the highly coveted and industry prestigious ICFF Editors' Award (Best School). The award recognizes the best and most innovative designs at ICFF 2016. Read More >>
