The prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship supports outstanding students who want to study abroad. It was no surprise to the faculty and staff when HPU student Samantha Patanapaiboon was chosen for the award.

"As a pre-med student with a psychology minor and one who has had to work 2-3 jobs to support herself through college, Samantha did not think she could fit a semester abroad into her tight degree plan nor did she imagine having the finances to afford travelling and living in another country. I'm thrilled Samantha worked as hard as she did mapping out her degree plan and applying for scholarship in order to study in the country her father is from. Since this was Samantha's first time to Thailand it was also the first time meeting her grandmother," Melissa Matsubara, Director, Study Abroad & International Exchange Programs

And it's not just Samantha living up to this expectation of excellence. She's the sixth HPU student in less than two years to achieve this significant award.

Samantha's advice to students: "Step out of your comfort zone to learn and grow." 

For Samantha this means she had the opportunity to study at Mahidol University in Thailand for the Spring 2016 semester.

The Gilman Scholarship is one of the largest and most prestigious study abroad scholarships but there are many other scholarship and grant opportunities available for students interested in studying in another country.
