RIT to lead new Manufacturing USA Institute

RIT's Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy, as part of its Manufacturing USA initiative, to lead its new Reducing Embodied-Energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute—a national coalition of leading universities and companies that will forge new clean energy initiatives deemed critical in keeping U.S. manufacturing competitive. The REMADE Institute, under the RIT-led Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance (SMIA), will leverage up to $70 million in federal funding that will be matched by $70 million in private cost-share commitments from industry and other consortium members, including 85 partners. Alumnus named Forbes '30 Under 30'

RIT alumnus Sean Petterson landed on the prestigious 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 list in manufacturing and industry. Petterson, who graduated from RIT in 2013 in industrial design, is a founder of the industrial safety products company StrongArm Technologies Inc. According to Forbes, StrongArm has raised $4.5 million from investors, including 3M, which helps with distribution of exoskeletons designed to reduce arm fatigue, avoid muscle strains and prevent back injuries. Customers include Con Edison and military shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries. Petterson started the company in 2010, which is now based in Brooklyn, N.Y., with Justin Hillery '13 (multidisciplinary studies) when they were students. Read More >>

RIT seeks partnership with Moscow State University

RIT faculty will meet in January with their counterparts at Lomonosov Moscow State University, while RIT students learn about winter ecology in Russia. A contingent from the College of Science will travel to Russia Jan. 9-16 for a conference focusing on opportunities for collaboration and student exchanges between the two universities. The meeting will be held at the Zvenigorod Biological Station outside of Moscow. Five RIT students will attend a short course on winter ecology held concurrently at the field station and taught by Carrie McCalley, assistant professor in the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences, and Celia Evans, a professor of forest ecology at Paul Smith's College. Read More >>
