Savannah Woolston: Strategizes first career move with digital media firm

Recent political science graduate Savannah Woolston is kick-starting her career as a Junior Strategist for Washington, D.C. based digital media and communications firm Chong + Koster, working primarily for advocacy and e-commerce clients.

"My studies really helped inform the way I view and engage with political structures and systems," the Anchorage, Alaska native said, "which is just so indicative of the transformative experience that is LMU."

No stranger to the political arena, Savannah interned for California Attorney General Kamala Harris, Senator Dianne Feinstein, and lent her time and talents to Alaskan Senator Mark Begich's campaign for re–election in 2014, a networking opportunity that she says led to her strategist role.

When originally searching for colleges, Savannah was drawn to LMU for its L.A. location and diverse program offerings. She paired her political science major with a theatre minor, satisfying her dual passions for politics and acting.

"The first time I stepped foot on LMU's campus I remember wanting to be a part of it," Savannah said. "I got the immediate sense that it was a good community." Savannah was pleased to discover that her first impression was correct, saying she learned a great deal about service and social justice while at LMU, and how to effectively integrate them into one's life.

"LMU afforded me with some amazing opportunities to delve into my fields of study and gain the confidence needed to go out into the real-world and be a young person with and for others," Savannah said.

In addition to her rigorous coursework, Savannah was a member of the Honors Program, Delta Gamma sorority, the Jesuit Honor Society Alpha Sigma Nu, and Vice President of the College Democrats. Prior to graduating, she was named Student Employee of the Year (2015-2016) for her work with Campus Activities.

Looking to the future, Savannah hopes to flourish in her current position and over time rise through the ranks.

"I think digital is the future of campaigns and electoral work, so I would like to stay on that side of the political spectrum for awhile."

As for what advice Savannah might have for incoming Lions...

"Invest in your friendships," Savannah said. "This is the only time in your life where you will have so many people who want relationships and a support system as badly as you do."
