If Siri is a modern-day Wizard of Oz, then Adam Cheyer ’88 is the man behind the curtain. Twenty years ago, at the nonprofit research institute SRI International, Cheyer developed the first prototype for Siri. In 2003, with funding from the U.S. Defense Department, the prototype evolved as part of the largest artificial-intelligence project in U.S. history.

He is noted as a thought leader for international development work, specifically for child rights, education, and government.

After spending three decades as an educational leader in California's community college system, Martha Kanter '70 was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009 to serve as the undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Education. Her work focused on implementing the student loan reform agenda and making college affordable for a broad range of students across the nation.

Social activism takes on many different forms. For Andrew Slack '02, co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance, his creative approach to tackling global issues was to "turn fans into heroes" by mobilizing the community that brought the wizarding world to life. The non-profit organization has raised over a quarter of a million dollars towards equality-related initiatives and was featured on J.K. Rowling's website.
