Dear Diana, Medical Laboratory Sciences – Students within this major complete a unique 3+1 program where they take coursework at Purdue for three years before applying to a full-year experience in a clinical hospital setting. These students are prepared to perform and analyze clinical tests on patient tissues, blood and other body fluids to aid in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of disease. Sometimes our graduates also opt to become forensic laboratory technicians/scientists who analyze blood samples and DNA. These students are qualified to sit for ASCP certifications after graduation. Further, the prerequisites for most medical schools, physician assistant programs, physical therapy programs, and dentistry programs are already included within the program! Watch this video to learn more about the School of Health Sciences. Nutrition and Dietetics – Nutrition plays a vital role in health and disease. There is growing evidence of the role of diet in the prevention, development, and treatment of major diseases. Upon successful completion of this program and a dietetic internship, graduates can sit for the Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exams. Students in this major often double major with Nutrition, Fitness, and Health or Nutrition Science – many of the prerequisites needed for medical/professional school are included within these programs and the rest can be included as electives; the requirements for most physician assistant programs are already included within this major. Watch this video to learn more about the Department of Nutrition Science. Public Health – Upon successful completion of this program graduates can sit for the ACSM Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist and the NCHEC Certified Health Education Specialist exams. In addition to the Public Health core, students choose a concentration in which they would like to specialize – Health Policy & Management is our most popular option. Our college also offers an accelerated 5 (4+1) year Master of Public Health (MPH) program that can be paired with our undergraduate degrees to potentially save one full year of tuition. Students are qualified for a variety of jobs with the undergraduate degree, but completing the MPH will provide additional opportunities for advanced positions.
