BOILER UP!

Annie Gassner, Junior, Hometown: Naperville, Illinois

Hi Diana!

My name is Annie Gassner and I would love for you to consider applying to Purdue and to join me next year in the College of Engineering. The college application process may seem a bit daunting. To help simplify it, I recommend making a list of the features that you are looking for in a potential school: high ranking academics, campus involvement, location, etc. Maybe you’ll find a school that checks all the boxes on your list, but if you’re like me, I didn’t have a “love at first sight” experience when searching for a school to attend. I applied to twelve different universities and visited six of them before choosing Purdue.

  • Feeling at home while making a difference in the world. This was just as important to me as academics. I visited Purdue three times!! On my final visit, David, the presenter and the Director of the Office of Future Engineers, was speaking about what it’s like to be a student at Purdue and relating topics to popular songs. At one point he played a song that I will forever associate with Purdue: Safe and Sound by Capital Cities. By the end of that visit, I was set on coming to Purdue, not only because I knew I could feel “safe and sound”, but because I could see myself growing and learning with the people around me.

  • Pride and acceptance. From my first day on campus, I felt accepted and proud to be a Boilermaker! Diversity and inclusion are some of the most important values at Purdue and this stood out to me during my week of orientation - also known as BGR (Boiler Gold Rush). As a female going into engineering, I was nervous about being a minority in a male-dominated field. Thanks to BGR, the Women in Engineering Learning Community, and everyone I met, I was starting my first week of school with new friends and a newfound confidence that I really could succeed at Purdue.

  • Countless opportunities. Thanks to connections with Purdue and the Construction Engineering and Management program, I have had two consecutive summer internships with Bechtel Corporation. I have also been to five different countries thanks to Purdue programs! I love to travel and Purdue continues to help me foster this passion along with my other growing interests. Choosing Purdue was the best decision for me and I can’t see myself anywhere else.

For consideration for merit scholarships as well as our Honors program make sure to complete your application by November 1.

I hope you decide to apply to Purdue and visit our campus to see if we are the right match for you!

Best of luck!
Annie Gassner, Junior
