Team AWARE won RIT's Tiger Tank new business competition, hosted by the Albert J. Simone Center for Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship. AWARE is a fatigue detection and alert system designed to combat drowsy driving. The system uses video-based monitoring of a user's head position, eye movement and blink rate to detect physiological signs of fatigue.

RIT Dubai goes 'smart' with city science global initiative

Dubai is on a quest to become the world's "smartest city" before hosting World Expo 2020. And RIT Dubai is helping make it happen. Smart cities are a way for municipalities to improve quality of life for residents in areas such as water and electricity, public health, sanitation, transportation, affordable housing, infrastructure, IT connectivity and digitalization, and safety and security. Tapping RIT's core strengths in sustainability, architecture, computing, imaging science, design and engineering, RIT's global campus in the United Arab Emirates was invited to partner with the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority and Smart Dubai to support this goal. College of Applied Science and Technology students devise tool to catch asteroids

ORCHID is a device being built by six mechanical engineering technology students to catch an asteroid. The team moved into the final round of a NASA-sponsored collegiate design challenge called Micro-g NExT, part of its Asteroid Redirect Mission. ORCHID, their prototype 'grabber' is intended to retrieve samples of asteroids, to draw them in for closer study or divert one's direction to avoid a collision with Earth. A combination long-reach grabber and specimen container, ORCHID was praised by NASA engineers for its durable gripping capabilities, cost-effective manufacturing plan and simple design. Read More >>

Rock climbers aiming for the top in national competition

Eight RIT students from the Rock Climbing Team will compete in national competition at the Collegiate Climbing Series in San Diego, California. The team is coming off of a first-place overall victory in the northeast regional competition earlier this month. Nearly 400 athletes from approximately 40 colleges will participate in various competitions, including speed, bouldering and sport climbing. "Everyone is looking to improve their scores from previous competitions and at the same time, it's friendly competition," said Andrew Wetjen, a fourth-year applied arts and sciences major from Harleysville, Pa., and current team captain. A friend took Wetjen to RIT's Red Barn to climb for the first time as a freshman. "I enjoyed it and decided it would be my thing," he said. "It's challenging mentally as well as physically and you have to figure problems out like a puzzle. It's not the same every time." Read More >>
