Dear Diana,
Our students followed Tuesday's election very carefully, with a wide range of reactions and emotions. I was pleased and proud to see a letter Lash Nolen, a senior from Alta Loma, California and our student government president, sent to her fellow students. Her thoughts convey a sense of the values and the hopes that characterize the attitude our students bring to all their various works here, and I wanted to share this with you:
"I know there is consternation and uncertainty as we move forward. As LMU students, we uphold the inherent value of each and every human person, and we must continue to find strength in our university's mission. We must move beyond tolerance to mutual respect and understanding; we must continue pursuing lives of meaning and purpose.
As Lions we are women and men for others. We will continue to work for justice and unity. It is imperative that we support our community as we reflect on the election results. We will engage in brave dialogue and stand in solidarity as we move forward together. As we process our emotions, I remind myself of President Snyder's challenge ‘to imagine LMU as a circle, and then imagine no one standing outside it.’ He continued, ‘Whatever our personal identities, our respect and care for one another must always win out.’
We are fortunate to be members of a supportive Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount community at LMU. I am grateful to be at a university where I can learn in a climate of mutual concern for one another."
Thanks for your interest in LMU.
Sincerely,
Matt Fissinger
Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Admission
