Dear Diana,

In case you haven't heard, the Common Application is live and ready to go. Some schools may encourage you to submit your application now. Drew suggests you consider using these last weeks of summer to craft a draft of your personal essay. You can now review the essay prompts for the 2016-2017 Common Application.

And to help you get started, here are my Top Five College Essay Tips:

  1. Start early: Make sure you've written that essay before you start your senior year. You'll be glad you did!
  2. Be yourself: Don't create fictions. Think about what interests you, what your passions are and then write about them. Don't write what you think others want to read. Remember, if you're quoting from another text, make sure you give your source attribution.
  3. Take a risk: Don't settle for the safe essay-the one everyone else is writing. In fact, check with your friends to see what topics they are writing about, and don't write about them.
  4. Keep in focus: Answer the question. Pay attention to the length. Use the essay to make sure the admissions committee gets to know you as a person.
  5. Proofread: It's easy to miss obvious mistakes when you've lived with the piece for as long as you may have. Eliminate "digital shorthand." To be safe, get some feedback from your favorite teacher, counselor or parent.

Follow these 5 tips and you are on your way to completing your application, but remember, keep it in perspective. The essay is important, but it's not the only thing that admissions committees consider, yet a well-written essay could very well make the difference.

I look forward to reading your essay in the coming months. Let me know whether you found my advice to be helpful.

Very truly yours,
