Program Overview
Economics for Leaders (EFL) is a selective residential summer program for high school students held on prestigious college campuses across the nation.
A central tenet of EFL is that the economic way of thinking is an essential tool for effective leadership. Participants actively engage in developing their understanding of both economics and leadership theory. Specifically, they learn to use economics to think critically about their own choices and those made by others in the world around them. The curriculum includes a combination of important micro- and macro-economics topics. Program staff employ interactive challenges to teach students to use perspective, consensus building, and the stages of team formation to effectively exercise leadership.
In addition to academics, these programs provide students with other benefits. They spend a week on a university campus, experiencing life in a residence hall. They receive instruction from university professors and have the option to earn two semester hours of undergraduate credit in economics. Perhaps the most enduring benefit, however, is that participants form friendships that can last a lifetime.
"I continue to support Economics for Leaders for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, every student I send, regardless of personality, interests, or degree of high academic level, returns enlightened and enthusiastic about college. The lessons learned about themselves oftentimes translate into college essays. They gain confidence about their ability to transition to college along with a greater understanding of their leadership style and role in group dynamics."
